Why Multi-State?

Your VA CHP Alone Leaves Gaps

Virginia honors all out-of-state permits — but that doesn't mean other states honor Virginia. Add the Utah CFP and you're covered almost everywhere you travel.

FAQ

Common Questions

Do I need to own a gun to take the class?
No. For the VA and Utah classes, you do not need to bring or own a firearm. These are classroom-only courses. For the Maryland course, you will need a handgun for the live fire qualification on range day — rentals may be available, contact us to confirm.
Can non-Virginia residents take the course?
Yes. Virginia issues non-resident CHPs, and Utah's CFP is specifically designed for non-residents nationwide. Our classes are open to residents of any state. The Utah CFP is especially popular among out-of-state visitors because of its broad reciprocity coverage.
How long until I receive my permits?
Virginia CHP: typically 45 days from filing with the circuit court. Utah CFP: 60–90 days after submitting to Utah BCI. Maryland W&C: varies; MSP reviews each application individually as a may-issue state. You'll leave class with a training certificate the same day — the permit application is your next step.
What states are covered by the Utah CFP?
Utah has formal reciprocity with AL, AK, CO, FL, GA, LA, MS, NH, NC, ND, OH, PA, SD, TX, VA, WA, and WV — plus additional recognition in many more states. Combined with VA, the VA+UT combo covers approximately 35–38 states. States NOT covered include CA, CT, HI, IL, MA, MN, NJ, NM, NY, OR, and RI. Always verify current reciprocity before traveling.
Is this recognized in [specific state]?
The best current resource is the USCCA Reciprocity Map or your state's attorney general website. Reciprocity agreements change — we recommend verifying before any trip. As a general rule, the VA+UT combo covers most Southern, Mountain West, and Midwestern states. Contact us for specific questions.
How do I apply for my permit after class?
Virginia: take your training certificate to your local circuit court clerk with Form SP-248, a passport photo, and payment. Utah: submit your application online at bci.utah.gov within 1 year of your class completion date. We walk through the application process in class and provide all necessary paperwork guidance.
I already have a Virginia CHP. Can I just add Utah?
Yes — that's exactly what our Utah Add-On course is for. Just 2 hours in an evening session and you'll have everything you need to apply for the Utah CFP. Only $79. Book the "UT Add-On" package.
Legal Disclaimer: Reciprocity agreements and state laws change frequently. Completion of a Multi-State Carry Academy course satisfies the training requirement only. Students are solely responsible for understanding and complying with the laws of each state where they carry. Always verify current reciprocity before traveling with a firearm.
